We stayed at Bryn Elltyd ECO Guest House [gmaps] which has 1 x 7kW 24amp Tesla Destination charger, 1 Rolec 32amp Type 2 socketed charger (you will need a lead) and 1 x Rolec Tethered Type 1 Charger.

The house backs on to the Ffestiniog Steam Railway, which you can jump on just a small walk away from the house. In front of the house is a hydro lake and a small cafe just down the road.

The owners (Ceilia and John) are extremely friendly, knowledgeable and really set this location apart from other places we’ve visited. If you’re interested in EVs, renewable energy, hiking, wildlife, carbon neutral homes or things to do around Snowdonia then John is your man, he’s a retired aircraft electrical engineer and teacher

The rooms are certainly not the Ritz but that isn’t what they’re aiming for, they’re a decent clean bed for the night with a hearty breakfast in the morning, the room was a little cosy but what do you expect from a room called ‘Hobbit House’, they have numerous other rooms available on their website.

Blaenau Ffestiniog is a small town/village 1.7miles down the road, it has restaurants, Co-op, Post Office, train station and other amenities. We drove down but you probably could walk 40mins-1hr depending on route.

Rooms range from £45 (single) to £90 (large double) per night including breakfast which we thought was good value.

We visited the following places and I’d recommend them all

  • Snowdon Summit [gmaps] via steam train (£74 per couple) from Llanberis. Park at Electric Mountain, 5min walk, as it’s £4 for the full day Vs £8 to park in the car park opposite the station + the money goes to a good cause. Booking in advance on the website is recommended as the queue was massive + sold out one day we visited. Failing that they also have a dirty diesel version for slightly less money. Roughly 1hr up, 30minutes at the summit and 1hr down again.
  • Electric Mountain, Hydropower station tour [gmaps] – We thoroughly enjoyed this 1hr30min tour, costing £8.50pp. All phones/keys/bags etc must be left in the car/in the secure £1 refundable gym style lockers. This location produces as much as 1,000,000 kWh daily!
  • The Glassblobbery, Glass Studio, Glanrafon, Corwen [gmaps] – This is quite far from the house but might be on-route for some people. We picked a few nice presents.
  • Llandudno beach, pier etc – If the weather is nice it’s OK.
  • Conwy Castle
  • Crabbing in Portmadog

Decent places to eat:

  • Cellb – Blaenau Ffestiniog [gmaps] – The outside of this place is rough and looks awful but inside it’s decent and food was great.
  • Hebog Eat, Beddgelert [gmaps] – Decent fillet steak, great for dinner.
